Contraindication Lip Tattoo

Contraindication Lip Tattoo: just the part of the journey where you get to put all the theory to the test – because when it comes to getting safe, long-lasting results from a lip tattoo, there’s no substitute for understanding your own skin and health situation. I’m Olha Po, a cosmetic tattoo artist with Face Figurati in Melbourne – I’ve been tattooing lips for nearly ten years now, and what I can tell you is this: knowing whether you’re in the right place to get a lip tattoo is almost as important as choosing the right technique.

Think of this as just the friendly chinwag we’d have in the studio – you know, the one where we go over all the things that can potentially cause a problem, like cold sores, medical conditions, lip fillers or skin conditions that might just make things more complicated than they need to be.

Why Understanding Contraindications Makes All the Difference

Before we start applying pigments and anaesthetic cream, we need to know whether your lips and overall health are in good condition. Not every client is ready for a lip tattoo, and that’s perfectly okay – timing and preparation are everything after all.

In Melbourne, where the weather can be right nuts from one day to the next, your lips are bound to behave differently depending on the season – so knowing all the potential risks is key. By doing so, you can:

  • avoid getting caught out by a herpetic outbreak
  • reduce the risk of swelling and allergic reactions
  • stop pigment loss before it even becomes a problem
  • support safe, comfortable healing and follow advice that promotes proper healing after lip blush throughout the recovery period.
  • achieve an even, youthful lip blushing look

A lip tattoo might be a cosmetic technique, but it’s also a bit of a semi-permanent makeup procedure – so yeah, contraindications do matter.

Major Contraindications for Lip Tattooing You Need to Know

Some of these contraindications are just a ‘no go’ for the day, while others mean you need to think twice before getting a lip tattoo – and some just mean you need to prep and get the okay from a healthcare pro first. Here are the big ones to look out for:

1. Cold Sores & Viral Infections

Cold sores are probably the one thing we get asked about most often. Now, the sad truth is that around 80% of adults have already got HSV-1, which means the risk of getting an outbreak during a lip tattoo is pretty high if you don’t know how to manage it. And yeah, it’s not great for the healing process either.

What this means for you:

  • If you’ve ever had a cold sore, you’ll need to follow a proper antiviral protocol before we can even start.
  • If you’re currently in the middle of an outbreak, we’ll need to reschedule, sorry.
  • If you know you’re prone to getting them, some good aftercare ointment and super strict hygiene are gonna be your best mates.

I once had a client who insisted she wasn’t “that bad” for getting cold sores, but we still got her to take some medication anyway – and you know what? She told me afterwards that it was the first lip procedure she’d ever done without getting a cold sore afterwards. Timing really is everything.

2. Allergic Reactions & Patch Testing

If you’ve had a prior reaction to lip gloss or any cosmetic product, we really need to know about it. Sure, our permanent makeup ink and natural pigments are generally pretty well-tolerated, but every so often, people do have sensitivities.

A patch test will help us figure out if you have an allergic reaction to:

  • Any of the colours we use in our pigments
  • The topical anaesthetic cream we use to numb the area
  • Our aftercare products, which help the skin heal

It’s extremely rare, but we do this as a precautionary measure.

3. Autoimmune Disease & Medical Conditions

If you happen to have any of these conditions:

  • Thyroid trouble or Graves disease
  • Lupus
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Blood disorders
  • Keratosis pilaris around your lip area

Then it may affect how well the tattoo heals. Auto-immune conditions often muck with how your skin heals, how the pigment takes and your risk of getting herpetic outbreaks.

Most clients can still get tattooed, but only if we get your GP’s approval and if you’ve got realistic expectations.

4. Skin Conditions Around the Mouth

To get the best results, your lip skin needs to be in good nick.

Unfortunately, we can’t do the tattoo if you’ve got:

  • Really dry lips
  • Cracks
  • Dermatitis
  • Active acne
  • Bacterial infections
  • Inflamed skin

If your lips are compromised in any way, the pigment won’t implant smoothly, and the risk of colour loss or scarring goes way up.

5. Keloid Scarring & Keloid Scars

It’s pretty rare for people to get keloids on their lips, but if you’ve got a history of keloid scarring, we’ll give you a good, hard look. Now, while cosmetic lip tattooing is a lot less invasive than getting a tattoo on your body, we play it safe on the grounds.

6. Recent Lip Filler

You can get lip filler and lip blushing done together if you time it right.

We need you to wait:

  • At least 4-6 weeks after getting filler done
  • Till the swelling has gone down
  • Till your lip shape is stable

This way, we can do a good job on the tattoo and avoid any distortion.

7. Chemical Peels, Alpha Hydroxy Use & Laser Treatments

Anything that thins or destabilises the skin barrier is a no-no for now.

This includes:

  • Chemical peels
  • Using Alpha Hydroxy acids (AHAs) aggressively around the mouth
  • Laser treatments around the mouth
  • Using Vitamin C too heavily around the lip line

We usually wait 2-4 weeks, depending on how strong the treatment was.

8. Radiation Treatment & Chemotherapy

Clients who are undergoing chemo or radiation need to wait till they’ve been cleared by their doctor. When you’re on chemo or radiation, your immune system is pretty compromised, so healing becomes super unpredictable.

At Face Figurati, I always put your health first – your lips can wait.

9. Semi-Permanent Lip Creation & Dark Lip Neutralisation Considerations

Advanced techniques like:

  • Dark Lip Neutralisation (let’s face it – some lip colours just don’t work with darker melanin)
  • Lip colour correction ( more often than not, dark lip tattoos go wrong)
  • Semi-permanent lip creation (a big ask when you’ve got the wrong skin type)

These advanced techniques have a lot of extra things to watch out for – and that includes a higher risk of hyperpigmentation for people with darker skin.

  • Hormonal fluctuations (pregnancy, menopause – you name it – can all affect your lip colour)
  • Recent sun exposure (Melbourne sun is notorious, so let’s get the facts straight)
  • Past trauma to the lip tissue ( basically anything that’s made your lips angry, sad or otherwise traumatised)
  • Finding the right cosmetic technique for you is key, which is why experienced artists who complete advanced lip tattoo courses are often better equipped to manage complex cases.

Melbourne’s Weather & Your Lip Tattoo Candidacy

Melbourne’s weather is pretty unpredictable – and that makes it tough on your lips.

Winter

Cold air plus indoor heating basically dries your lip skin. Flaky lips are a real thing, and unfortunately, they can play havoc with pigment implantation – so a good lip balm routine focused on keeping lips hydrated during recovery can make all the difference.

Summer

Sunburn, salt water and dehydration are the kiss of death for your lips – and especially for darker lips that need to be neutralised – you can see why UV lip balm becomes a top priority in summer.

Medication & Healing: Where Things Can Go Wrong

Certain medications can seriously impact:

  • Bleeding (so you don’t want to be on blood thinners the week before your lip tattoo, for example)
  • Swelling (so some thyroid meds can be a real challenge for lip tattoos)
  • Pigment retention ( so with some meds the colour just won’t stick – and that can be a real shame)

So you want to make sure you’re not on any of these meds at the wrong time, and that you’re able and willing to do the aftercare properly – it’s a team effort between you and your body.

Real Stories From the Treatment Room

The Winter Flakiness Fiasco

One client turned up with lip cracks underneath her lipstick, and we had to postpone, but it was worth it in the end because she followed an aftercare routine and her lip tattoo healed perfectly.

The Laser Timing Slip Up

Another client had laser treatments around her mouth a fortnight before – we’d have been crazy to have gone ahead with the lip tattoo then – but we rescheduled, and she ended up with a beautiful result.

The Dark Lip Neutralisation Success Story

A client had very dark lip pigmentation, but still managed to get her bright lip look with Aquarelle Lips after all the right adjustments – patience is key in cases like this.

FAQ

Can I get lip blushing if I have cold sores?

Provided you follow the antiviral protocol to the letter, you should be right to go.

Can lip tattooing cause allergic reactions?

Rare but possible – a patch test helps us check if your skin can handle the stuff we use.

Does lip filler stop you from getting tattooed?

No, just need to wait 4-6 weeks for the swelling to settle.

Can I get a lip tattoo if I’ve had Chemical peels?

Yes – but only once the skin has fully healed (which is usually 2-4 weeks, but can depend on the strength of the peel)

Why can’t I have a lip tattoo during chemotherapy?

Your body is pretty compromised, so it’s just not worth the risk of infection.
